Lotus has confirmed that its Hethel plant in Norfolk will not be shut down, despite earlier talks from Lotus Technology’s CEO about exploring US “localisation plans.” This assurance was given to UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, clarifying the sports car maker’s commitment to its UK operations and securing 1,300 jobs.

The urgent Sunday meeting between Reynolds and Lotus/Geely management was critical in dispelling fears that the company was considering a full shift of production to the United States. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson stated that Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”

Lotus had paused production in mid-May, partly due to the then-25% US tariffs on car imports. With these tariffs due to be reduced to 10% on Monday, the economic landscape for exports from Hethel, where 60% of Emira sports cars are sent to the US, has significantly improved, allowing for a resumption of operations.

Lotus maintains that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand” and its largest European market, underlining its dedication to its British roots. The government’s continued support for the automotive sector also strengthens the positive outlook for the Hethel facility’s future.
