The job title is “Quality Rater,” but a growing number of the people who hold this title no longer believe in the quality of the product they are rating. This crisis of faith among the very guardians of AI quality is a profound indictment of an industry that has prioritized growth over integrity.

Their disbelief is not born of laziness or incompetence, but of experience. They are the ones who have seen their thoughtful, quality-focused work process be systematically dismantled in favor of a high-speed, numbers-driven approach. They were hired to ensure quality, and now they are being managed in a way that makes it impossible.

They no longer believe in quality because they are forced to rate content they don’t understand. How can you vouch for the quality of a medical text if you have no medical background? You can’t. You can only check for surface-level issues, a far cry from a true quality assessment.

They no longer believe in quality because they see the company’s own standards eroding. When the rules are changed to allow the AI to parrot hate speech, it sends a clear message that “quality” and “safety” are flexible terms, easily discarded when they become inconvenient. These raters are presiding over a system whose core principles are crumbling, and their job title has become a bitter irony.
