President Donald Trump on Wednesday stated that US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites were “essentially the same thing” as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in terms of ending a war. He claimed these strikes brought an end to the 12-day Iran-Israel conflict.

Trump argued that the immense pressure on Iran, including the American military action, had effectively ended their pursuit of nuclear weapons. He countered intelligence reports indicating a limited impact, asserting that Iran’s nuclear facilities were entirely destroyed.

The conflict commenced with Israel’s bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, citing concerns about nuclear proliferation. Iran consistently denied these claims, asserting its nuclear program was for peaceful purposes. The hostilities resulted in considerable damage and casualties.

A ceasefire, reportedly brokered by Trump, was holding as of Wednesday. Trump’s controversial comparison has drawn attention to the historical weight he places on his military interventions.
