In response to escalating fuel costs impacting key sectors, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced a government-approved financial aid package targeting truck drivers, farmers, and fishers. This move comes amid growing unrest in southern Italy, where trucker protests have led to significant delivery disruptions and subsequent shortages in stores and markets.
Prime Minister Meloni has made it clear that while the right to peaceful protest is respected, the government will not tolerate intimidation tactics or illegal road blockades. She described recent incidents involving threats against drivers and damage to vehicles as forms of intimidation rather than legitimate forms of protest.
The Italian government is taking steps to ensure the smooth movement of goods, with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi tasked with responding to calls from transport, farming, and retail associations to maintain supply chains for businesses and consumers. Additionally, the government is committed to curbing price speculation, which could exacerbate the effect of supply disruptions on households and businesses.
As part of the measures, financial support that was already in place under an agreement with road transport associations will be maintained, along with newly sanctioned assistance for the agriculture and fishing sectors. The government emphasizes that the broader public, including workers and businesses, suffers most when transport networks are disrupted.
Meloni reiterated the government’s commitment to engaging with peaceful demonstrators while addressing rising fuel costs and safeguarding essential supply chains. Legal measures, including those that classify road blockades as a criminal offense, will be employed to ensure compliance and protect economic stability.
