Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has positioned himself on the brink of making history in Formula One after clinching a victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian driver now leads the drivers’ standings with 365 points, just a handful of races away from potentially securing the world championship title.
As the competition intensifies with five race weekends remaining, Antonelli is ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who sits in second place with 242 points. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, holds third place with 241 points. In Austin, Russell finished in eighth place, and Hamilton took fourth, leaving Antonelli in a strong position going into the next race in Mexico.
Despite missing the opportunity to clinch the championship in Austin, Antonelli remains focused and optimistic. He expressed his desire to finish the season on a high note and carry the momentum into future competitions. “My approach to racing will remain unchanged,” Antonelli stated, emphasizing his concentration on the races ahead rather than the title within reach.
If Antonelli manages to secure the championship, he will become the youngest Formula One world champion in history. Additionally, he would be the first Italian to win the drivers’ title since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat in 1953.
