The Iranian government has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf nation is hindering attempts to uncover the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who went missing amid a recent conflict. In response, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, asserting that it holds no Iranian pilots in custody. Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official with Iran’s armed forces, highlighted that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting approval for several months to visit Qatar and investigate the situation. He urged the Qatari government to permit this visit and requested the International Committee of the Red Cross to engage with the matter.
The situation is further complicated by Iran’s previous announcement that it had recovered the remains of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an attack involving the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, categorically denied the claims that Qatari forces were detaining Iranian pilots. According to al-Ansari, the pilots had been contacted after allegedly breaching Qatari airspace, and defensive actions were taken when communication attempts failed to elicit a response.
Qatari authorities assert that their search and rescue teams actively conducted operations to locate the pilots and their remains. They also claim to have collaborated with Iran concerning the transfer of the remains of one pilot that was recovered. Doha maintains that it had extended an invitation to Iranian authorities back in April, encouraging them to dispatch a team to Qatar to gather information related to the search and rescue efforts. However, Qatar states that Iran has yet to respond to this invitation.
This dispute arises amidst ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other nations in the region following the initiation of the conflict earlier this year.
