The London Marathon is set to break new ground in 2027 by transforming into a two-day event, a first in its history. This change will accommodate a remarkable 100,000 runners over the weekend of April 24-25, marking an unprecedented expansion in response to overwhelming demand. Over 1.3 million hopeful participants entered the public ballot, prompting organizers to adjust the format to allow more people to take part. Despite the increase in capacity, the likelihood of securing a spot remains less than 10%.
This expanded event is not just about numbers; it is poised to make a significant impact on charitable fundraising. Organizers anticipate that the two-day marathon could generate more than £150 million for charity, potentially setting a new record in UK sporting history. Additionally, the marathon is expected to contribute approximately £400 million in social and economic benefits, underscoring its importance beyond the race itself.
The revised schedule will see a division of events across the two days. On one day, the elite women’s race, elite female para-athletes, championship, and “Good for Age” women’s races will coincide with a mass participation event featuring close to 50,000 runners. The following day will highlight the elite men’s race, accompanied by another large-scale mass participation event, ensuring a thrilling and inclusive experience for all involved.
Participants will be limited to running on only one of the two days, with the results of the ballot set to be announced in early July. This special two-day format is intended as a one-off celebration, with the London Marathon expected to revert to its traditional single-day format in subsequent years. This unique approach aims to celebrate the spirit of the marathon while accommodating the growing interest and enthusiasm surrounding the event.
