Luxembourg has initiated its first nationwide alert phase concerning drinking water due to persistent high temperatures and insufficient rainfall that have intensified water consumption and stressed public supplies. The government has called for national cooperation to safeguard drinking water reserves and avert potential shortages. While participation remains voluntary on a national level, numerous towns have already instituted obligatory restrictions on water use.

Among those enforcing these new measures is Esch-sur-Alzette, where residents are prohibited from engaging in non-essential water activities. These include washing vehicles outside of professional car washes, cleaning sidewalks and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and decorative ponds, operating fountains without water recirculation, cooling food or beverages under running water, and irrigating parks, sports fields, and other green areas, with the exception of newly planted sections.

Businesses that depend on water for their operations are not subject to these restrictions. However, individuals who violate local rules may face penalties ranging from €25 to €250. Meanwhile, the Water Administration has reported that river levels across Luxembourg are alarmingly low, prompting a nationwide ban on river water extraction, excluding the Moselle River.

Officials are encouraging the public to adopt water conservation practices such as taking shorter showers, operating washing machines and dishwashers only when fully loaded, limiting garden watering, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor water usage. Authorities suggest these voluntary actions could help mitigate the need for more stringent measures if the dry conditions continue.
