Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is advocating for increased budget flexibility within the European Union, a move she believes is necessary to help member states manage rising inflation and soaring global energy costs. In a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Meloni emphasized the importance of discussing this issue during the upcoming ECOFIN meeting, as well as at the subsequent EU Council meeting.
Meloni highlighted that the current inflationary environment needs to be a key consideration when evaluating European fiscal parameters and the allowable deficit levels for member states. She argues that additional flexibility in the EU’s budget framework would enable countries to provide more substantial support to families and businesses adversely affected by escalating energy prices.
As EU countries grapple with the economic challenges posed by high inflation and energy costs, Meloni’s call underscores the importance of revisiting fiscal policies to better address these pressing issues. Her proposal aims to empower member states with the tools needed to cushion the economic impact on their citizens and businesses.
