In a bid to enhance their cooperation in cutting-edge sectors, Singapore and Luxembourg are focusing on emerging technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications. This initiative stems from their desire to bolster a partnership that has been robust over the years. According to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, both countries face similar challenges as small states characterized by limited domestic markets and scarce natural resources. He emphasized that their open economies and global connections have allowed them to evolve into key financial and business hubs that cater to larger regional markets.
Prime Minister Wong underscored the strong economic linkage between the two nations, pointing out that Luxembourg is the foremost European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. The two countries are also striving to enhance the relationship between the ASEAN bloc and the European Union. Wong expressed that Singapore and Luxembourg are advocates for regional integration and share a commitment to maintaining an open, rules-based international system.
During his official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden engaged in talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions addressed geopolitical developments and strategies to promote stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit coincides with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral ties.
The establishment of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore signals a heightened commitment to deepening its engagement with Singapore and the broader region. This diplomatic move is seen as a strong indicator of Luxembourg’s intent to fortify its presence in Southeast Asia. Additionally, Prime Minister Frieden is set to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will discuss Europe’s role and sovereignty amid a shifting global landscape.
