Vietnam and Switzerland are poised to enhance their longstanding diplomatic relations and broaden cooperation across various sectors. This commitment was underscored during an event in Bern celebrating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh emphasized the importance of Vietnam’s relationship with Switzerland, highlighting the European nation’s support during critical moments in Vietnam’s history.
Thanh noted the development of bilateral ties in key areas such as politics, trade, investment, education, science and technology, innovation, and cultural exchanges. She expressed Vietnam’s intention to deepen these ties by building on mutual political trust and traditional friendship, with particular focus on expanding economic and technological collaborations. Thanh pointed to Switzerland’s expertise in areas that align with Vietnam’s development needs, presenting opportunities for further cooperation.
The economic partnership remains a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Switzerland relationship, with bilateral trade surpassing $2 billion annually. Over 100 Swiss companies have established a presence in Vietnam, investing in industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia remarked on the significant expansion of cooperation since Vietnam embarked on its economic renewal process, acknowledging Switzerland’s role in supporting Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh highlighted future milestones, including the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the completion of free trade agreement negotiations between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association. These developments are seen as pivotal in advancing bilateral relations.
Both countries recognize further potential for collaboration in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development. This shared vision reflects the commitment of both Vietnam and Switzerland to adapt and grow their partnership to meet the evolving demands of the global landscape.
